What is PIV Gear Train?

“PIV stands for "Positive Infinitely Variable" drive, the name given to a power transmission system using a slatted steel chain. The P.G Drive’s (PG–U series) gear is the 'classic' infinitely variable speed gear units. The simple and efficient PIV variator is a good alternative to an electric drive: from machine tools to paper production lines, from packaging machines to pump drives. Due to the negligible power losses the variator performs with very high efficiency, even when running under partial load.

PIV Operation

At the heart of the PIV unit is all metal slatted chain and the grooved wheel faces.  The slats in the chain move laterally to engage the grooves in the wheel faces.  Therefore, the chain cannot slip.  The pitch diameter of both pairs of wheel faces is controlled to an infinite number of positions by the pivoting control levers and the control screw.


PIV – Flat Link Chain Design

The chain consists of links, the number of which depends on the size and regulation range of drive conversion units.  Chain links are assembled from pressed steel plates coupled by pivots.  Chain ends are coupled by a closing pivot into an endless chain and prevented by a split pin from slipping out.  These pivots are cold riveted, and the holes for pivots are provided with hardened casings.

In the chain links – perpendicular its axis – these is a jacket fixed in which there is mounted a bundle of flat links.  The flat links are push fitted in an axial direction.  Flat links movement is determined by function position of drive conversion unit.

PIVs are used heavily in the paper, textile, printing, metalworking, powdered metal, and chemical industries. They may, however, be present on virtually any equipment requiring an adjustable speed output or straight gear reduction. Due to the negligible power losses the variator performs with very high efficiency, even when running under partial load.


Their essential qualities are: Minimal maintenance-expenses and high efficiency enables economic solutions, even at continuous operating. High control precision. The qualities of the” torque-transformer” admits high torques also with low speeds. Extensive accessories: remote control units, tacho-generators, speed signaling potentiometers, limit switches, electronic speed-control systems. The high protection-type allows to operate in dirty environments without expensive additional features.

D- Drive is a variable speed geared motor, robust step less unit suitable for various industrial applications.

The unit is designed to provide low output speed at corresponding high output torque. The drive unit is manufactured from standard components and comprises of AC squirrel cage motor, variable speed drive and gearbox with case hardened profile ground helical gears. It can be easily adapted to any machine design. The unit is very compact and save time and money because they are ready to fit drive modules. The interior part of this drive is the variable speed pulley enclosed in a housing and connected to the gearbox and motor. The speed variation can be achieved by means of a hand wheel. Average life to be expected is about 10 years before major maintenance. Belt life would depend on application and environment. General experience is about 3 to 4 years life.
